Who can obtain a burn permit?

Only residents living in approved areas can obtain a permit. Permits are conditional and may be revoked at any time. You must be 18 years of age or older.

How can I obtain a burn permit?

You may register online using this website, or you can visit the Municipal Office in person during regular business hours.

What can I burn?

Only clean wood may be burnt during your open-air burn. Any other burning of materials requires the prior approval of the Fire Chief.

Do I need a permit?

If you want to have an open-air fire (burn barrel, brush burning, agriculture burning, etc.) then yes, you need an approved permit. If you are having a barbecue or a fire in a permanent outdoor fireplace with a grill, a permit is not required while cooking. If you are having a campfire, then a permit for a campfire/recreational fire is required, unless you are in a licensedcampground.

Is there a cost for a burning permit?

No, permits are free of charge; however, it has to be renewed annually.

Do I need to call before I burn?

Yes. Call the burn permit line @ 1-855-336-1475 to activate your burning permit each time you wish to burn.

How do I register my burn and how long is my burn active for?

In order to register your burn, you must call 1-855-336-1475 and enter the phone number with which you registered your account. The automated phone system will register your intent to burn and your burn will be activated. From the time your burn is registered it is considered active for 24 hours. However, just because the burn is registered and active for 24 hours does not take away from the condition that burning can only occur between the hours of 6pm and 10am during the Ministry of Natural Resources Fire Season.

Do I need a permit for fireworks?

The sale, possession, use, setting off, ignition and/or discharge of fireworks in Northern Bruce Peninsula is restricted. A permit is required and must be approved 30 days prior to your fireworks display. An approved permit, by the Fire Chief, allows you to have a family fireworks display and allows for the possession of family fireworks based on the conditions set out by the Fire Chief. You can apply for your family fireworks permit here and you will be contacted by the Northern Bruce Peninsula Fire & Emergency Services about additional information prior to possessing family fireworks in Northern Bruce Peninsula. For additional information please refer to By-Law No. 2022-21, Being a By-Law to Regulate the Sale, Possession, Use, Setting Off, Ignition, and/or Discharge of Fireworks within the Municipality of Northern Bruce Peninsula. Display fireworks require a separate permit – contact the Fire Chief for additional information.

Do I need a permit for campfires/recreational fire?

Yes! Campfires require an open-air burning permit in Municipality of Northern Bruce Peninsula. Campfire from the beginning of May through to the end of October each year. Permits are activated immediately upon registering. You do not have to call 1-855-336-1475 to register you burn like other open-air burning permits. Campfires/recreational fires in campgrounds are exempt for this permit requirement. Once you register your campfire/recreational fire permit it is automatically activated for the entire year. You can have a fire at anytime as long as the requirements of By-Law No. 2019-47, Being a By-Law to Regulate the Setting of Open-Air Fires within the Corporation of the Municipality of Northern Bruce Peninsula. “Campfire/Recreational Fires”–shall mean a fire that is set and maintained solely for the purposes of providing warmth or recreational enjoyment when all the following provisions are met: 1. The fire is contained in an above-ground, metal fire grate or fireplace that is designed to burn wood in a contained space and that cannot be moved to an unsafe location while a fire is contained therein, or a pit in the ground that has a non-combustible wall and is intended to burn wood safely; 2. The closest edge of the fire shall not at any time be started or located less than four (4) metres from any building, structure, property line, tree, canopy, hedge, fence, roadway, overhead wire or other combustible article; 3.The area designed to contain the fire is not more than 66 centimeters diameter and not more than 66 centimeters in height. 4.That the fire is controlled such that flames and hot embers do not pose an undue risk of fire to nearby combustible materials, and that the fire is attended and supervised at all times by at least one responsible adult person, of eighteen or more years of age.
